                                      CONFERENCE INFORMATION

The conference has been convened and is hosted by following two organizations:

​

The Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies (SCJS) is an international academic and secular association that fosters research, networking of people and ideas and the dissemination of information regarding the historical and contemporary developments involving crypto-Jews of Iberian origins and other hidden Jewish communities around the world.

​

The St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society (SAJHS) promotes greater knowledge and understanding of the Jewish experience in the oldest European city in the United States from the founding of St. Augustine in September 1565 to the present. SAJHS actively recruits partners to help tell the story of the history and heritage found on Florida’s coast.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION

The registration fee, including conference attendance, lunch, morning coffee, beverages and refreshments is $50.00 through October 29th. Thereafter the fee is $65.00. A lunch prepared under Rabbinic supervision is available upon advance request and at the individual’s expense.

Two additional post-programs have been organized to enhance the visit and enjoyment of conference participants: 

  • “The Secret”, a dramatic telling of the story of a Jewish family in medieval Spain in the 16th century as they deal with reconciling their religious heritage with the threat of conversion or possible death from the Inquisition Court. The performance will be performed by Lee Weaver, a noted St. Augustine thespian. Presentation will be performed at the hotel at 7 p.m. Tickets, with payment in advance, is $20.00

  • A tour of historic sites of Jewish interests in St, Augustine including the site of the first settlement in September 1565, the first mission, and archeological sites at Nombre de Dios led by SAJHS president Rabbi Merrill Shapiro. Following the tour, participants at noon will adjourn to the Columbia restaurant for lunch which is included in the $35.00 cost of the tour. Participants will gather in the hotel lobby, Monday morning at 9:30 a.m.
